With Gemini, Google Maps gets a big boost that makes it easier and smarter to navigate and explore. We’ve been pushing the limits of what a map can be for years with technology. India has embraced many of our AI features, such as Lens in Maps and Review Summaries, over time. Today, we’re pushing this vision a step further, utilizing Gemini to deliver a truly conversational, AI-enhanced experience while you explore and navigate the world.
We’re combining the power of Gemini with our reliable, real-world data to make your journeys smarter and more intuitive than ever, from discovery to navigation. These new features are enabled by Gemini’s powerful reasoning and summarization capabilities —grounded in our trusted data about 35 million places in India, 250 million places around the world, and insights from the Maps community.
Getting things done while navigating just got simpler and easier with Gemini
Along with our extensive information about the real world, we’re introducing the first hands-free, conversational driving experience in Google Maps, built with Gemini. It’s like having a knowledgeable friend in the passenger seat who can confidently help you get where you’re going, while you stay focussed on the road.
You can find places along your route, like “the nearest petrol pump,” get quick answers about your destination, like “What’s parking like there?”, handle multi-step requests, like asking to find a restaurant, followed by, “OK, let’s go there.” By asking, “…can you also add a calendar event for this meeting tomorrow at 5pm?” you can also connect to your other apps. With your permission, Gemini connects with your Gmail and Calendar and adds the place automatically.
Gemini’s proactive, local advice will help you learn before you go. Gemini will do proactive analysis and summaries of reviews and web content on Maps in order to provide you with the most useful, precise, and useful information about a location while you are checking it out on Maps—before you even go there. For instance, if you’re planning to visit Delhi’s Dilli Haat, Maps will now succinctly give you insider tips like “It’s okay to bargain for prices” and “the momos in the Nagaland Stall are highly rated” or remind you to not miss the famous musical clock at 12 pm while visiting the Salar Jung Museum in Hyderabad.
Ask Maps questions about a place to get relevant answers
Despite the comprehensive tips, you may still have some questions. Gemini acts as your reasoning engine, sorting through all the rich information in Maps—reviews, photos, and place details—and the web. You can now ask Google Maps for a specific, relevant answer in a flash. Taking our previous example as a basis, you can look at Delhi’s Dilli Haat and inquire about whether or not it has parking. or “What are some stalls you must visit?” With this feature, you can start asking questions about a place today as part of your daily explorations. In the coming weeks, you’ll also be able to use Gemini in Navigation and get proactive local tips summarized by Gemini. We’re excited for you to try these new experiences on Android and iOS.
