Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) is a national level entrance examination conducted twice a year by National Testing Agency (NTA) to select candidates for admission in NITs, IIITs, Self-Financed institutes, etc.
The exam is scheduled to be conducted (for the first time since the formation of NTA) from January 6th, 2019 to January 20th, 2019. The second phase examination of JEE Main 2019 is scheduled to take place from April 6, 2019, to April 20, 2019.
Those of you who are preparing for JEE Main 2019 examination (either first or second phase) must be curious to know about the important topics in each subject and their respective weightage in the previous year examinations. Well, why shouldn’t you be curious about this fact? Knowing important and scoring topics and practicing questions from these sections prior to JEE Main 2019 exam can immensely boost your chances of qualifying the exam.
In this blog we would take you through such important and scoring topics from Chemistry and would also look into the weightage (in terms of the number of questions appeared and the respective marks carried by those questions out of total weightage of Chemistry portion) of each section of Chemistry in the previous year’s exam papers.
Highlights of Exam Pattern
From 2019 onwards (that is post setting up of NTA) JEE Main 2019 exam would be conducted in online mode only and the offline mode option would be done away with. However, the pattern and syllabus of the exam would remain the same as that of JEE Main 2018. Candidates who are preparing for the exam are advised to go through the pattern of the exam so, as to get a brief outlook and understanding of the exam.
For your reference the pattern of the exam is tabled below:
Mode of Exam | Online |
Section in paper | 3 (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) |
Nature of questions asked | 90 questions (30 Questions each from Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) |
The time duration of the exam | 180 Minutes (3 Hours) |
Maximum Marks | 360 |
Marking pattern | 4 Marks for a correct answer. 1 mark to be deducted for the wrong answer |
Subjects covered | Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics |
Important Topics form Chemistry
The Chemistry section (similar to Physics and Mathematics) would have 30 MCQ type questions and would have a total weightage of 120 marks out of a total of 360 marks. That is 1/3rd of JEE Main Paper (same division in case of Physics and Mathematics) would be dominated by Chemistry.
The 120 marks that are allotted for Chemistry would be seen divided under its various sections like Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry.
Important topics from Chemistry as per previous years JEE Main paper analyses are tabled below for your reference:

Scoring Topics
From the above data, it is clear that Physical Chemistry has a little more weightage as compared to other to sections of the Chemistry in JEE Main paper. Interestingly the section is also a high scoring one thanks to its numerical and mathematical nature with more scope for formula-based quick answers.
Physical chemistry can help you garner around 40% to 45% of the total marks that are allotted for the Chemistry section. Important topics form Physical Chemistry for JEE Main 2019 are:
- Atomic structure
- Concepts of Chemistry
- Structure of Molecule
- Thermodynamics
- Surface Chemistry
- Coordination Compounds
- Equilibrium
To ace Physical Chemistry regular practice of numerical is a key.
