Lower Saucon Township Police have released a warning for people to beware of an Internet scam being done through popular buy and sell web sites.
Police say they have received two reports of fraud from people trying to sell items on the web site Wallapop. In both cases, police said the sellers were contacted by someone from out of state who said they wanted to buy their item. In the scam, the buyer sends a check to the seller that is written out for an amount greater than the item’s sale cost. The buyer then asks the seller to send the excess in a money gram to a third party. The seller takes out cash and sent its before the bank has time to discover the check is fraudulent.
Police say when selling items online be sure to read the rules of the hosting website and be suspicious of anyone who wants to send a check for more than the sales price. Police also caution that both buyers and sellers should make transactions face to face in a safe place.
