Injuring your back is right up there with teeth and ears as one of the most painful and debilitating injuries that you can sustain. The back gets put through an awful lot of strain in your day to day life and whether it is a result of something as simple like picking up your child or as a result of lifting too heavy in the gym, causing yourself a back injury isn’t going to take you out of action for some time.
We spoke with leading neurosurgeon Joseph Yazdi about back injuries and how giving yourself time to heal from them and living life the right way after an injury to your back can help you not only get on with your normal life but keep yourself off his surgery table in the future.
Rest
The first thing you need to do once you have injured your back and throughout your recover is lots and lots of rest. Almost every single body movement involves the discs and muscles in your back as well as you spine and anything you do, no matter how slight it may seem, will put extra pressure on your back. Get up and about too soon can stop your back from healing further and this will mean that you will have problems again in the future.
Visit a Chiropractor if the Pain Doesn’t Stop
If after a few days rest the pain continues then it is time to go and see a specialist chiropractor to take a look at the damage that you ahem potentially caused. Chiropractors may be able to give you a correction if you have slipped a disc or a deep tissue massage if it is a muscle problem. Chiropractors are specialists in the lumbar regions and they will be able to give you the best course of action going forward.
Consider Alternative Therapies
There are some wonderful alternative therapies out there such as cupping and acupuncture that can pinpoint areas of your back and offer them a great amount of relief. In the past these remedies were dismissed by medical professionals but they are now widely accepted forms of therapy that have helped millions of people cure their back problems.
Diet
Switching your diet around a little can really help your back heal, you need a diet that is anti-inflammatory and one that features plenty of natural fish oils which will help you muscles and bones to heal. The idea of an anti-inflammatory diet is that your body will be able to switch its focus to the source of your pain and it can use all of its strength to target the area of acute pain.
Once you ahem recovered from your back problems it is important that you visit a chiropractor on a regular basis to ensure that you can ward off any further injuries. The back is strong but once it has suffered some problems it is likely that there will be repeats of them in the future.
