Sony Mobile today launched two new smartphones – its flagship Xperia XZ1 and a mid-range offering, the Xperia XA1 Plus.
Boasting what Sony says is an industry first real-time 3D capture technology, the XZ1 took less than a month to enter the Malaysian market after its debut at the annual IFA conference in Germany in August.
What is unique about the 3D feature, you ask? Basically, it means the XZ1’s rear camera is able to scan objects and people in the real world – using the company’s proprietary Motion Eye camera technology – and replicate them as 3D objects within the pre-installed 3D Creator app.
There are four modes available for 3D scanning – face scan, head scan, food scan and freeform scan. The first three modes come with step-by-step guide tutorial to perform the 3D scanning while the last mode enables users who are already familiar with the process to proceed on their own.
The scanned objects can be animated in 3D and then shared on social media platforms as 3D stickers. Users who have access to 3D printers can also print these images out as figurines as keepsakes.
The Xperia XZ1 “promises the experience people are seeking and helps them share those experiences with others. The 3D Creator for example opens a world of possibilities across gaming, AR, VR and more,” said Sony Mobile Malaysia country director Andrew Cheong.
While the 3D capabilities are impressive, Sony also claimed that the 19-megapixel camera was developed based on the company’s expertise in the imaging segment via the Cyber-shot and Alpha camera products.
Other camera features include video capture at an extreme 960 frames per second, providing super slow motion video playback, and predictive capture which detects and captures smiles even before the user clicks on the camera shutter.
The XZ1 is also among the select few phones which support HDR (high dynamic range) with its 5.2in full-HD display, meaning Netflix and Amazon Prime Video users will be able to enjoy viewing vivid and deep contrast videos.
Being a flagship device, it’s powered by a top-of-the-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and features 4GB RAM, 64GB internal storage, a rather small 2,700mAh battery as well as water- and dust-resistance.
Priced at RM2,999, it runs on the latest Google Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box. It is expected to go on sale in Malaysia at the end of the month.
Meanwhile, the mid-range Xperia XA1 Plus features a MediaTek Helio P20 octa core processor, 4GB RAM, 5.5in full-HD display and a 23-megapixel rear camera. On the front is a 8-megapixel 23mm wide-angle lens front camera that promises to capture all the action, even in group selfies.
Other features include 32GB internal storage, 3,430mAh battery, a fingerprint sensor, dual-SIM capability, and Android 7.0 Nougat pre-loaded.
Available in Gold, Blue and Black, the XA1 Plus is expected to go on sale in October at RM1,499
